Assam Rocked by Rs 501 crore Minority Scholarship Scam

Following the massive Assam Sub-inspector ‘cash for job’ scam, the state has been rocked by yet another scam. This time it’s a Rs 501.40 crore minority scholarship scam, which has been resulted due to the embezzlement of scholarship funds of minority students. Till now 21 teachers across have been arrested for the scam.

Assam Minority Development Board Chairman Muminul Aowal informed that the investigation of the case has been handed over to the CBI.

“I wrote a letter to Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in September this year requesting him to hand over the minority students’ scholarship scam in Assam to the CBI. On November 8, 2020, Naqvi handed over the investigation of the scam to the CBI,” Aowal said.

“There are cases in various police stations in the State against the scam. I did request the Chief Minister to investigate the scam. At the directive of the Chief Minister, the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) is investigating the scam. The investigation has led to the arrest of many people,” he added.

The Chairman stated in front of the media that school headmasters, bank officials, inspectors of Schools, and brokers are involved in swindling the money of the minority students’ scholarship in the name of a large number of fake students.

The scam was rampant in Morigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta, Dhubri, Golaghat, Goalpara, Darrang, Karimganj and Kamrup districts, Aowal added.
