Assam Sends Report For Grant Of ST Status To Communities

Assam: The Assam government will soon send to the Centre the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM). The report constitutes for preparation of modalities for granting of ST status to the six ethnic communities of the Assam. This was announced by Assam CM, Sarbananda Sonowal. He also said that the proposed Autonomous Council for the Moran community would start functioning shortly.
This was announced by the CM of Assam on August 30 in Guwahati. The CM was in a meeting with a delegation of Various organizations of the Moran Community.
The six communities are Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, and Tea Tribes.

The state government is making sincere efforts to solve the issues affecting the Moran community. The GoM by the state constitutes preparation of modalities for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six communities. After initiating consultations with all stakeholders, the GoM will soon submit its report. The report will be sent to the Union government.
The state government is making all efforts to ensure granting of ST status to the six communities. This will be done without affecting the rights and privileges of the existing scheduled tribes.

The state government will soon publish a book on the history of the Moran community. Sonowal hopes that the book will present a detailed picture of the rich heritage, culture, and contribution of the community to Assamese society.
Also, various steps have been taken by the government for the holistic development of the community.

Representatives of the Moran community submitted a memorandum to the CM in the meeting. The memorandum highlights the Moran community’s various demands.
In the meeting, a delegation of Baghjan Milanjyoti Sangha also submitted a memorandum. Their demand is the early release of compensation to the families of the Baghjan gas incident.
