Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press meet at Janata Bhawan on Monday announced that the Assam State Cabinet has taken the decision to dissolve the State Madrassa Board.
During the meet, the state minister said that all the Madrassa and High-Madrassas under the State Madrassa Education Board will be transferred under the Directorate of Secondary Education Council. The names of all the Madrassas will be removed and will be renamed as high schools and colleges.
The disestablish of the Madrassas shall stand after the declaration of the results of the examination to be held in 2021-22. All the academic and administrative authority will be transferred to the Directorate of Secondary Education, Assam and teachers will be trained to teach general subjects in the schools.
Speaking to the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “From all the 189 Madrassa schools, the word ‘Madrassa’ will be removed along with the Quran courses. This will come to effect from April 1, 2021, and from 2022, there will be no higher Madrassa examinations. The two subjects, ‘Fika’ and ‘Akait’ are the only syllabus which is different between Madrassas and other colleges.”
The minister further said, “all the Arabic colleges will get converted to Higher Secondary Schools and the Arabic Council will be transferred to Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).
At present, there are four Arabic colleges under the State Madrassa Board, 14 title Madrassas, 138 senior Madrassas, and 230 pre-senior Madrassas in Assam. All these 542 institutions had two syllabi, one is general syllabus prescribed by the Higher Secondary Education Council and the other is purely theological subject on Islam.”
