Minister of Excise, Forest & Environment and Fisheries of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya on Friday morning released two exotic species into the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden.
The two species of Capuchin monkeys and Hyacinth Macaws were rescued from an illicit smuggling racket in the Cachar district division of Assam and were released to the new breeding center in specific cages, built specifically for them. Before the release, they were kept in quarantine for about 45-50 days.
The cages were specifically built keeping into mind the environment of the two species and were properly sanitized.
However, the species has been kept out of display as they were wild and not domesticated when rescued and will take time to cope-up with the new environment.
Speaking exclusively to Headline8, a high forest official stated that in the future the officials will be releasing exotic tortoises and kangaroos. However, since the construction of their cages is still going on, their release has been delayed.
Since the lockdown, the face of Assam Zoo has changed drastically, new constructions are going on and there have been huge positive changes in the environment and surroundings.
Taking to Twitter, the Excise Minister stated, “In the ceremonial event today, released the hyacinth macaws and capuchin monkeys to their new breeding facilities from quarantine at Assam State Zoo, Guwahati. These exotic species were earlier recovered by our forest forces from an illegal racket in Lailapur, Cachar.”
