Baghjan Oil Well Fire To Be Extinguished Soon: Says PM

News Desk: The fire which occurred in Baghjan Oilwell is likely to be extinguished by July 7. In a meeting of PM Narendra Modi with Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, plans are being executed as per the schedule and it is proposed to cap the well on 7th July 2020. Plans to control the emission of gas from the well has already started, as said by the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO).

Notably, the fire which started on July 9 has not yet been extinguished. On Thursday, concerned PM Narendra Modi called for a special convention to review the current situation.

Central Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at the meeting revealed that Indian and foreign experts have joined to draw out detailed plans and control the flow of gas from the oil well and cap it. As per plans, it is proposed to cap the well on July 7,2020 taking necessary precautions. Also, there are is a proposal to completely close the oil well.

In the meeting, PM Modi directed the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry to study and document the incident carefully for studying so that in future such incidents can be averted.

Since May 27,2020 the oil well in Baghjan has started emitting gas and oil uninterruptedly. The situation got worse on June 9 when a fire started in the oil well.

The well caught fire on the evening of June 8 and continued to rage for at least nine days, killing two OIL firefighters and injuring many others. Foreign experts have been called by OIL. They along with ONGC, OIL, and NDRF engineers and specialists have been making efforts to cap gas and oil leakage but till now there has been no positive result.

The Central Government has already assembled a team to investigate and present a report within a month to the Government regarding the incident. The Government’s decision to completely shut down the oil well is quite notable. Although only time will tell how much they keep up with their promises.
