In a significant development, the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India has decided in a meeting of the management council of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai to establish a comprehensive Pediatric Cancers and Haemato-Lymphoid Services Centre at Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), which will be first of its kind in the entire North-Eastern (NE) India.
The proposed project will involve construction of a seven-storied building at an estimated cost of 73.78 crore in the existing vacant plot of land in the BBCI premises near the Jironi Ghar (Guest House) with a proposed completion date of four years.
According to Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, Director of BBCI, the project for the comprehensive Pediatric Cancers and Haemato-Lymphoid Services Centre will be started very soon.
Presently, there is scarcity of dedicated Pediatric and Haemato-Lymphoid Services in the entire NE region. Around 400 childhood cancer patients visit BBCI from Assam and NE region every year.
Recently, the World Health Organization and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India have selected BBCI as one of the 11 centres of the South East Asia Regional Practice Network for Childhood Cancer Management. Of the 11 centres, four centres are from India including BBCI, further stated Dr. Kataki.
