Cities in Assam Worst In ‘Swachh Survekshan 2020’

Guwahati: The Centre on Thursday announced the results of the annual survey of cleanliness ‘Swachh Survekshan 2020’. While Madhya Pradesh’s city Indore for the fourth time topped the list of the cleanest city of India.

Cities in Assam have shown the worst performance in the national ranking of Swachh Survekshan in the category of the population between 1 lakh and 10 lakhs.

Four cities under this category were at the bottom. Smart city Guwahati ranked 356 while upper Assam’s town Dibrugarh ranked 353.

However, Barak valley’s town Silchar did fairly well and is ranked 340.

Whereas, Central Assam’s Nagaon trailed and is positioned at 358 in the national ranking.

In the award category of the NE region under 50,000 to 1 lakh population, Tezpur bagged ‘Best City in Citizen’s Feedback’ while Jorhat bagged the ‘Cleanest City’ tag.

West Karbi Anglong’s district headquarter Diphu was awarded ‘Fastest Mover City’ in the category of 50,000 to 1 lakh population. Whereas, in the same category Sibasagar bagged Best city in “innovation and best practises” and Karimganj was awarded ‘Best Self-sustainable city’.

In the category of the population between 25,000 and 50,000, Dhemaji’s town Silapathar was awarded ‘Fastest Mover City’ while Barak Valley’s Hailakandi bagged Best city in “innovation and best practises”.

Whereas, in the category under 25,000 population, Lahkipur was awarded ‘Fastest Mover City’

Swachh Survekshan is meant to monitor the performance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which was launched on October 2, 2014, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It aims to make India open-defecation free by 2019.

The survey was introduced by the government to generate large-scale participation in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It also aims at inculcating a spirit of healthy competition among cities towards becoming India’s cleanest cities.
