Congress Legislator from Nazira constituency Debabrata Saikia lost the status of opposition leader in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The present strength of the Indian National Congress Legislature Party in Assam Legislature Assembly is not equal to the required majority fixed to constitute a sitting in the House, the required majority is considered as one-sixth of the total number of members in the House.
The decision to withdraw the recognition of Saikia as the opposition leader was taken by the Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami which came after the Congress party’s strength in the Assembly was reduced to 20 MLAs.
It is to be mentioned that Debabrata Saikia is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia.
He was elected to Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011 from Nazira constituency and retained his position again in 2016.
