News Desk: The court of Nagaon District and Session Judge rejected the bail plea of the 47 persons accused in the Lynching of Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath.
Families of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das expressed their satisfaction with the court’s decision. Since the incident, the families had been seeking justice for more than 2 years. This bail rejection news came as a satisfactory outcome for the two families. The final verdict of the case is expected to be declared by the end of this year.
The mob lynching incident took place on June 8,2018 in Karbi Anglong district’s Dokmoka region. The lynching took place in the backdrop of a widespread public rumours over rising child trafficking. The prime accused Alphajoz Timung allegedly spread a rumour of having spotted a pair of child lifters and asked the residents to block the way of Abhijit and Nilotpal’s vehicle when they were heading back to Guwahati. Due to the rising fear of child lifters among the villagers in the area, Timung was able to gather hundreds in a very short time.
When the lynching incident of Abhijit and Nilotpal went to trial, it was believed to be an open and shut case as there were many witnesses. The case was expected to be in favour of the victim’s family and all the accused would be behind the bars soon. But till date, justice has not yet been served and the trial is still in motion as many witnesses had turned unfriendly.
