News Desk: Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday ordered an enquiry on the coal extraction at Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary.
Guwahati High Court Judge Bajendra Prasad Kataki had been tasked by the Assam CM to investigate into the coal digging in Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary. Earlier on May, Assam CM Sonowal directed the Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to visit Dehing Patkai to conduct a field survey amidst outrage over mining activities.
CM Sonowal ordered the minister to visit the Wildlife Sanctuary to take stock of the situation. He said that his government will never compromise with its stand in the development initiatives. He also stated that his government is always committed to protecting the biodiversity and environment of Assam.
According to reports, Coal India Ltd. has been mining in the region since 2003. They applied for clearance again to mine 98.59 Hectares out of which 73 Hectares was used by Coal India Ltd. for carrying out mining activities.
Coal India Ltd. was given Stage-I clearance by Centre for 57.20 Hectares in December 2019.
