Different Autonomous Councils Meet, Sonowal Discusses Their Problems

Guwahati: CM Sonowal held separate meetings with different organizations that represent various communities of the state at Assam Administrative Staff College. On receiving their memoranda, Sonowal assured the organizations that the government would take pragmatic steps for meeting their demands soon.

Two factions representing Koch Rajbongshi Students Union and eight other organizations representing the Koch Raj Bongshi community today thanked the Chief Minister for introducing the bill for Kamtapur Autonomous Council in the Legislative Assembly. Sonowal also assured that the government is doing everything possible to give a final shape to the Council at the earliest.

Leaders of four organizations representing Garo community namely Garo National Council, Garo Students’ Union, United Garo National Council Movement Committee, and Garo Sahitya Sabha met Sonowal and submitted a memorandum. Chief Minister Sonowal assured that for the overall development of the people belonging to Garo community, the State government is committed as his government is working towards fulfilling all their demands including the demand of autonomy.

Meanwhile, a team representing All Assam Adivasi Students’ Union met Chief Minister Sonowal and requested him to dispose their long pending demands of granting them ST status. Sonowal apprised them that the GoM created for the purpose, would soon send its final proposal to the Centre to bring a logical conclusion to their demands. Sonowal further informed the delegation that the bill had already been introduced in the Raj Sabha which in deed is a reflection of the government’s commitment to do something constructive for the Adivasi community. Further, a coordination committee of the Autonomous Councils of Koch Raj Bongshi, Tai Ahom, Adivasi, Chutia, Gorkha etc met Sonowaland submitted memorandum enlisting their various demands, including granting adequate funds.

Moreover, people belonging to Rabha community living outside the ambit of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council met Sonowal and requested him to set up a Development Council for all of them. He also informed them that his government is in the process of taking steps for the socio-economic development of all sections of the people living in Assam.
