Fierce encounter broke out in Upper Assam’s Pengeri, Tinsukia district between Assam police and ULFA (I) cadre Pengeri, located 50 kilometres from Tinsukia, shares a border with Arunachal Pradesh. The ULFA (I) rebels infiltrate Tinsukia via Arunachal Pradesh’s jungle routes from their bases in Myanmar.
According to sources, the gunfight in Pengeri’s jungle lasted nearly 30 minutes. A team of Tinsukia police officers led by DIG Jitmal Doley launched the operation. Police suspected that the Ulfa-I group was led by Rupom Asom, a wanted insurgent cadre.
Meanwhile, a joint operation to flush out the rebel outfit was launched in the Pengeri.
“Our operation against the insurgent group will continue.” We have information that ULFA-I militants are present in the Pengeri area. “We launched an operation against the group, which resulted in a gun battle,” a police official said.
Gyan Asom, a ULFA (I) cadre, was killed by security forces in an encounter on July 1 in Kakopathar, Tinsukia.
