The final NRC in Assam will delete around 10,000 names as many ineligible people and their descendants were included in the list. This is according to a directive issued by the state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma and other officials.
On Tuesday, Sarma wrote to all the Deputy Commissioners and District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) directing them to issue speaking orders for deletion of such names.
The deletion of the names from NRC is as per Clause 4(6) of the Schedule under the Citizen (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. This will take place after specifically ascertaining the identity of the person.
Hitesh Dev after explaining the rule and other relevant clauses also pointed out that the concerned authorities can verify and include or exclude any name at any time before the publication of the final NRC.
The final National Register of Citizen of Assam was made public in August 2019. However, the Registrar General of India has not yet notified about it which leaves the historic document without any official validity.
The final NRC was released on August 31, 2019, which excluded names of about 19,06,000 people out of a total of about 3,30,28,000 applicants.
