Amid calls for the release of a 19-year-old Assam girl detained for allegedly supporting a banned outfit in a poem, police said on Wednesday that now the law will take its course. Barshashree Buragohain was arrested on May 18 in Uriamghat, Golaghat district, for allegedly posting a poem titled ‘Akou Korim Rashtra Droh’ on social media (will again rebel against the nation).
G P Singh, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order), stated on Twitter that there is “a specific call to indulge in waging war against the State in her Facebook post.”
“When someone publicly professes support for a banned organisation and declares intent of waging war against the Indian state, we are legally bound to prosecute that person. Following due process, a charge sheet shall be filed in a competent court of law. Let the law take its own course,” said the senior officer.
The girl is a second-year Mathematics student at Jorhat’s DCB College, and her exams are scheduled for later this month. Her parents have filed a petition with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the police to release her so she can take her semester-end exams.
People from all walks of life have demanded her release in response to their appeal. Abdul Khaleque, a Congress MP from Barpeta, has also tweeted in support of Buragohain’s release from prison.
