Margherita Coal Field dumping ground posing grave threat to the environment, locals protest

Coal

The dumping ground in Tiktok Koliyari in the North East coal field of Upper Assam is raising serious issues of concern which has ultimately led to a recognisable threat to the adjacent adjoining areas include wildlife and the natural cover.

The general public though have managed to stop the ongoing illegal mining and smuggling in the coal fields, there is still a reason for worry as the authorities of North East coalfield have taken no precautions or following any rules and regulations while carrying out the mining activities. Sadly, the smuggling of coal by coal mafias continue right under the nose of the administration who are unperturbed by the destruction of forest lands.

For the past three years, the mining and supply of coal by the North East coal field under Margherita sub-division of Tinsukia district, was halted. It was only six months ago, after continuous appeals by the locals and various organisations, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated The Tikok Kaliyori coal mine in Ledu.

But at present the open mining site is posing a serious threat to the public due to the terrible erosion caused by mining. The people residing in nearby villages have also protested and demonstrated against the North East Coal Field for not following the standard procedures for carrying out mining in the sensitive region.

Locals have alleged that the soil and stones that are extracted from the mines are thrown off the
Tikok Hills which in turn is harming the nearby areas.
