A fire broke out on Sunday night at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH). In the tragic incident, a child died. The fire occurred at the Maternal and Obstetric section of the hospital at the children’s NIPO ward.
According to sources, the child who was under ventilation died as the electricity connection was disconnected after the fire took place.
The new-borns were safely evacuated to the other departments. Many sustained injuries while they tried to run away from the ward with their new-born babies.
The reason behind the fire is suspected due to a short-circuit, but not yet ascertained.
