Microsoft Translator Now Supports Assamese Language

Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it has added Assamese as the latest Indian language in Microsoft Translator which will now provide real-time translation and transliteration support for the language.

The translator will now enable users to translate Assamese text in their apps, websites, workflows, and tools with Azure Cognitive Services Translator. Businesses will also be able to avail of multi-language support such as translation for e-content, e-commerce product catalogues, product documentation, and internal communication etc.

“Powered by Azure Cognitive Service Speech, users will also be able to translate speech into Assamese text or to translate Assamese text into another language with speech output.” Microsoft India said in a statement on Wednesday.

Welcoming the move, Assam Sahitya Sabha President Kuladhar Saikia said, “Such news brightens up the day! I thank all stakeholders, including young enthusiasts contributing to the internet resources, to make this possible.”

Microsoft now becomes the only cloud service provider that supports Assamese translation. With the inclusion of Assamese, Microsoft translator now supports 12 Indian languages. The other languages supported by the translator are- Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

As a result, over 90 percent of Indians will be able to access information and work in their native/preferred languages, making computing language-agnostic and more inclusive in the country.
