Guwahati: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday directed the authorities of Guwahati Central Jail to immediately facilitate COVID-19 tests for KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and his two associates Dharya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal.
The development came after reports emerged of Gogoi and his associates developing COVID-19 symptoms in jail.
Gogoi’s lawyers approached the court with a petition asking for immediate tests citing the health condition of the three. The petition said that Gogoi and his two aides are suffering from fever, cough and body pain, which are considered as symptoms of COVID-19. As a result, the court issued this interim order.
“Both Akhil and Bitu are suffering from fever, cough and body pain, which are considered as symptoms of COVID-19. Moreover, Dharya too has developed symptoms like fever and headache,” Akhil Gogoi’s counsel Krishna Gogoi said.
Akhil Gogoi was arrested by Assam Police for his role in the anti-CAA agitation and eventually by the NIA on charges of sedition. He is in judicial custody for more than 200 days now.
