Gorima Hazarika

Gorima Hazarika, a well-known Odissi and Satriya dancer from Assam, died on Friday in Guwahati. She
was 83 years old when she passed away. Gorima Hazarika was a talented Kathak dancer and performer who values all forms of art, including painting, set design, and choreography. Her creativity is evident in all of her classical dance dramas, which are imbued with meaningful themes and social messages.

Hazarika was born on April 27, 1939 in Guwahati, Assam, to Lokbandhu Dr. Bhubaneshwar Barua and Indraprabha Barua. She was the fifth and youngest of five siblings. In 1961, she graduated from Handique Girls College in Guwahati with a BA.

Gorima began learning to dance at a young age. She worked tirelessly with Pt. Dr. Maheswar Neog to put Satriya on the map at a time when females were not allowed. She is also credited with changing the costume of Satriya dance, abandoning the plain white cloth in favour of paat and buta designs. Hazarika is also well-known in Assamese cinema for her contributions. She had worked as a dance director in as many as 16 Assamese films, her first being Pulok Gogoi’s ‘Srimoti Mohimamoyi.’
