Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nomination at Majuli district on Tuesday. He will be contesting for the second time from Majuli.

The Assam CM filed his papers on the last day of submitting nominations. The nomination was filed before Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi at district collector’s office.
State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AGP President Atul Bora were also present during the nomination submission.
Before filing his nomination papers, Sarbananda Sonowal addressed a huge rally. Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma, Atul Bora, Ranjeet Kumar Dass and State Party In-Charge Baijyanta Panda were present at the rally.

He sought the blessings of the people to return him and the party to power so that they continue to “serve the state and ensure further development initiated under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal was clad in a dhoti, pat-silk kurta with a jacket representing the Mising tribe of the constituency along with “gamosas” of the different communities living on the island. He was also seen sporting a Nepali cap for a while during the procession.

His main contender in the seat will be former Congress minister Rajib Lochan Pegu. The Congress minister represented Majuli for three consecutive terms since 2001 but lost to Sarbananda Sonowal in 2016 by 18,923 votes.
