His visit will mostly revolve around vaccine procurement. He is likely to have two interactions with business forums on economic and Covid related cooperation between India and United States. US has a stockpile of 60 million AstraZeneca vaccine and also Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccines.
Moreover, the US has been playing a lead role in assisting India in fighting against Covid 19. It has already provided India with:
• Oxygen plants,
• Concentrators,
• Critical medicines like Remdesivir and
• Raw materials for vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute which is manufacturing Covishield.
The External Affairs Minister (MEA) is also likely to hold discussions with his counterpart Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
He will also meet Cabinet members and Senior Officials of the Administration dealing with bilateral relationships.
Another important aspect of the Jaishankar-Blinken meeting will be to discuss the resilient global supply chains as well as discuss the Indo-Pacific region with the Chinese Army still not willing to restore April 2020 status quo in East Ladakh.
On Thursday, Jaishankar made it clear that India-China bilateral relations will not be normalized till such time the PLA honors the 1993 and 1996 bilateral accords and restore peace and tranquility on the LAC.
EAM Jaishankar is also likely to meet Secretary-General Guterres in the backdrop of India joining the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member this year.
