Former Indian boxer and Asian Games gold medalist Dingko Singh passed away on Thursday after a prolonged battle against cancer. The legendary boxer was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2017.
The legendary Indian boxer from Manipur was aged 42 when he breathed his last at his Imphal residence.
His death has left Indian Boxing Federation stunned and a deep sense of void.
He was often regarded as one of the finest boxer India has ever produced. The ace boxer, Dingko Singh had clinched gold medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
The early life of Dingko Singh –
• Dingko was born to a poor family in Sekta village, Imphal.
• The destitute situation of the family forced the parents to leave Dingko at an orphanage.
• It was the scouts from the Special Area Games Scheme (SAG) that recognized Dingko’s raw boxing talent.
The death of the legendary boxer was consoled by every Indian.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Twitted –
“The demise of very young N Dingko Singh, an Asian Games gold medalist in boxing, has left me deeply pained. Hailing from Manipur, Padma Shri Dingko inspired a generation of boxers from the North East.
My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family at this irreparable loss.”

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju expressed his grief over the death of the legendary boxer.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote –
“I’m deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Dingko Singh. One of the finest boxers India has ever produced, Dinko’s gold medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games sparked the Boxing chain reaction in India. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. RIP Dinko”

Earlier in May 2020, he was tested Covid positive but the former boxer recovered soon.
