Govt. approves extension of PM-GKAY scheme for five more months

The Central government on Wednesday approved the proposal of extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) by five more months.

Under the PM-GKAY scheme, free rations are provided to over 80 crore people.
The scheme was reintroduced for two months till June, 2021 owing to the hardship faced by the poor due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic.
Earlier, on June 7, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the nation declared the extension of the scheme for a further period of five months. This declaration by PM Modi was taken in review of the continuing Covid 19 situation in the country.

Informing about the extension of PM-GKAY scheme, Press Information Bureau of India wrote –
“Government approves extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana from July 2021 up to November, 2021
Around 80 Crore NFSA beneficiaries were allocated additional 5 kg of foodgrains, free of cost for a period of 8 months.”
