Guwahati: PWD demolishes Ganesghuri foot over-bridge

After just a year of its inauguration, the staircase of the Ganesghuri foot over-bridge has been demolished by the Public Works Department (Roads).

This act has brought about various questions among the citizens of Guwahati who have alleged the Government’s lack of planning and carelessness in wasting the taxpayers’ money.

PWD officials refused to comment on the issue when contacted.

The foot over-bridge was inaugurated in February 2021, before the Assembly elections. Several FOBS was constructed across the city during the same period. Each of them was built at an expense of about Rs 9-10 crore.

The demolition activities have created a stir whereby people have taken to social media to question the reasons behind the act and whether the demolition section will not have an impact on the remaining structure.

Notably, GS Road now sees massive traffic clogging almost round the clock. Citizens have mostly blamed it on the ill-planned ‘narrow‘ FOBS that have led to a ‘chicken-neck’ effect at their respective locations, thus leading to the congestion.

Urban management experts have also said that given the rapid surge in vehicles in Guwahati, there is already a shortage of passageways and the FOBS might have to be demolished in coming years to ensure smooth flow of the cascading traffic.
