Guwahati, like the rest of the country, is preparing to celebrate the country’s 75th Independence Day on August 15 amid increased security measures.
Police have increased patrolling and deployed forces in several locations throughout the state, including border areas, to prevent any untoward incidents. The Guwahati Police Department has also increased security arrangements.
Guwahati City Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh told the media that the State’s 75th Independence Day will be celebrated with zeal and patriotic fervour.
Singh stated that “We are very alert about the security situation in the city and police have stepped up patrolling and anti-sabotage checks are all in full swing. All the forces whether it is CRPF, BSF, SSB, ITBP and the Indian Army have been deployed and they are cooperating with us. The public is with us and the government is fully prepared and Guwahati will celebrate Independence Day in a peaceful manner, there is no doubt about it,” said Singh.
While claiming that border security has been increased, Singh denied any claims of threat. When asked about the recent bandh called by the ULFA(I), Singh stated that such calls would not be considered, and that the people would come out in large numbers to celebrate Independence Day.
