News Desk: The Assam Government has decided to release 376 jail inmates on bail. S.P’s from all over Assam submitted a proposal to the government to release few jail inmates on July 22. The decision to release 376 jail inmates followed soon after the proposal.
Out of the 376 inmates, 111 jail inmates are from Guwahati Central Jail. Other inmates on the list are from various other jails. The list includes many jail inmates of Dhubri, Nalbari, and Karimganj. The list also includes Golaghat, Diphu, Udalguri, and North-Lakhimpur.
Dasarath Das, the IGP of Guwahati Central Jail gave Headline8 an exclusive telephonic interview. He gave detailed information about the decision taken by the government regarding the release of inmates. The list does not include bigshot criminals like Rakesh Paul, Ranjan Daimary, Niranjan Haloi.
Dasarath Das further informed that the government has instigated a High Power Committee to overview the proceeding. The proposal to release 376 inmates has many terms and conditions. For bail, one must fulfill a few terms and conditions. Some of the terms and conditions are:
- Under-trial prisoners are eligible
- A person serving a maximum of 7 years and less than 7 years of imprisonment
- A person serving imprisonment for petty or minor nature of the theft
- Carjackers are not eligible to apply for a bail release
Dasarath Das also confirmed that the decision to grant bail is not due to the ongoing pandemic. The government took the decision to manage and maintain social distancing in jail.
