The Gauhati High Court has issued directives to alleviate the alarming traffic chaos in Assam’s Guwahati city.

The orders were issued during the hearing of a PIL filed by Rita Das Mozumdar, who in her petition emphasised how traffic congestion has made city life haphazard and dangerous.

The court has directed the formation of a committee of three officers to prepare a comprehensive assessment of traffic congestion in Guwahati and make recommendations for dealing with traffic congestion in the city.

The committee will consist of the Guwahati City DCP (Traffic), the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, and an officer nominated by the Assam State Legal Services Authority.

Furthermore, Adil Hussain, the Assam transport secretary, and IGP Nitul Gogoi have been asked to serve as nodal officers in or above the committee.

The committee has also been asked to visit the main roads, markets, and other areas in Guwahati where there is frequent traffic congestion and make recommendations for manually addressing the congestion.

“The officers of the committee are permitted to take aid of the police staff as well for this purpose, if necessary,” the court order stated. The court also ordered the panel to submit its preliminary report by August 22.
