The voting for GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) election 2022 has begun today at 7:30 am. The polling is underway across the city amid tight police security. In the initial hours of voting around 12% polling recorded in Guwahati city till 10:00 am, informed Assam State Election Commission.
After a gap of 9 years since 201 the GMC election has been conducted. The last elected GMC body was headed by the Congress in 2013. but the BJP captured the council soon after it came to power in Assam in 2016 and Congress was reduced to a minority.
This year the battle has many competitors. AAP (Aap Aadmi Party), AJP (Assam Jatiya Parisad), BJP (bharatiya Janata Party) are in the battle. This year AAP has emerged as the strong competitor against BJP. Last month AAP has already emerged as the BJP’s biggest challenger after having their 1st victory in the two Municipal wards of Lakhimpur and Tinisukia.
In this election, a total of 757 polling stations have been set up out of which 60 polling stations are conducted. A total of 208 candidates are in fray for the GMC elections today. The counting of votes will take place on April 24.
