Guwahati: In a significant development in cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati has started Stereotactic Radiosurgery for the first time in North East India on July 17.
A 56-year-old female patient of primary lung cancer with single brain metastasis measuring 2.2 x 2 cm in the right parietal lobe of the brain was treated with whole-brain radiotherapy followed by a very high dose of radiotherapy in a single fraction which is known as stereotactic radiosurgery. It was carried out by using VMAT and6X FFF Beams.
The advantage of this highly sophisticated treatment is that it is a non-invasive procedure, reduces hazards of open surgery, and requires shorter treatment time. This Linear Accelerator based frameless radiosurgery treatment is more convenient for the patients. It is also associated with a high rate of tumor control.

This high-end Linear Accelerator was inaugurated by Mr. K. N. Vyas, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India on 8th February 2019 in presence of Dr. C. S. Pramesh, Director, TMH, Mumbai.
