Underlining the caretakers of Juvenile Centres, need to be vaccinated for their safety and also for the safety of the juveniles, the Gauhati High Court on Thursday (May 6) asked the Assam Government to consider treating them as “frontline warriors”.
With this under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 a total of 106 child care institutions are active in Assam which compromises government and NGO undertaking. Out of 106 child care homes, under the state government’s social welfare department, 9 child care institutions are being operated, in which 5 of them are observation of juvenile homes. Apart from the 4 children, homes are available while the remaining is all undertaken by NGOs. Further in all the 106 child care homes, there are around 1113 caretakers.
Henceforth, the social welfare departments along with the health service department have come out with an extensive plan for a vaccination drive among the caretakers of Juvenile Justice Homes.
As per information with the directive of the Gauhati High Court till May 6, caretakers above 45 years age group consist of 366 members in which 163 people have received the first dose and 34 people with the second dose (total 197 caretakers vaccinated) and without vaccination 169 caretakers.
However, the juveniles in the various centres have not been vaccinated yet putting the lives of the various juveniles in the centres at risk.
