High Court issues 45 days time limit for Govt. and Municipal Corp. on Garbage Disposal

To date, the State Government has not been able to determine the exact location in connection with the setting up of the city’s garbage disposal center and dumping ground. Preparations were made to set up a dumping ground in Chandrapur though the government dropped the idea after the local people’s protest. Deciding not to set up a garbage disposal project at the site, the government filed a petition in the Gauhati High Court. But the government has not been able to give proper information to the court on where the garbage will be disposed of as an alternative. Hence, the Municipal Corporation and the government have been given a time limit of 45 days. The High Court has directed to file a report on the extraction of garbage.
Recently, Guwahati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia passed the order after hearing the case. Notably, Social activist Pradip Baruah had filed public interest litigation in the high court on August 4th opposing the setting up of a garbage disposal center in Chandrapur. Agreeing to this petition, the state government submitted a report in the court, not set up a dumping ground in Chandrapur but even then the government has failed to submit a clear report to the court on an alternative ground for the garbage disposal.
