After the major earthquake on April 28th, 2021, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has taken a step to carry out an inspection of all apartments and multi-story buildings in the city to make sure their safety during natural calamities like earthquakes.
Speaking to the Headline8, a source from Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authorities (GMDA) said, “we’ve seen many apartments has developed cracks in the recent earthquake so we have decided to be stricter for Guwahati buildings,” Adding more he said, “State Government has hired reputed firms and renowned institutions to conduct technical and safety audit of these buildings. The audit will find out whether the city’s apartments and high-rises can withstand a major earthquake.”
A seismologist from North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat also said that the government has to standardize mushrooming of high-rises by sternly implementing a law to compel builders to hold fast to building safety norms.
He also said, “Many apartments and high-rises have been constructed in Guwahati without adhering to safety norms.”
