Indian model, singer, and actress Sonal Chauhan, who regularly shares fitness tips on her social media accounts, once again took to Instagram to share the benefits of the holistic yoga pose – Purvottanasana Or the stretch-of-the-east pose.
With a picture of her performing the pose, the actor listed out the benefits of the asana and who should avoid it. Take a look.
Purvottanasana or eastward facing stretch or upward plank pose strengthens the back, wrist, and leg muscles. It is a full-body workout stimulating the anterior and posterior muscles of the body.
It is very important to know the alignment of the body in an asana. Right alignment prevents injury and gives maximum benefits to the pose. Here are the steps to practice Purvottanasana correctly:
- Sit on the ground with the legs stretched in the forward direction.
- Place the palms on the ground by the side of the body.
- Keep the hands about 30 cm behind the buttocks. Keep the elbows straight.
- Point the fingers towards the buttocks with the trunk slightly reclined. This is the starting position.
- Inhale and lift the body in the upward direction. Raise as high as you can without straining the body.
- Balance the weight of the body on legs and arms.
- Keep the arms perpendicular to the floor. Rest the soles of your feet on the ground.
- Keep the elbows and knees tightened.
- Let the head hang loose and down in the backward direction. Breath normally.
- Ideally, in the final position, the body is parallel to the floor.
- Stay in this position as long as it is comfortable.
- Come back in the starting position. Exhale lower the body slowly. Relax and take deep breaths.
