India will host the 44th World Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai. The decision has been announced by the All India Chess Federation which was officially disclosed on Twitter by the FAIC office.
Amid Russian-Ukraine War the federation has taken this decision. Indian sports has also been affected by the Russia-Ukraine war.
It may be recalled that the Federation has cancelled the pre-scheduled programme of sports events to be held in Russia this year. It was only after such a tough decision by the Federation that India expressed interest in holding the mega event in its country.
The World Chess Olympiad matches were scheduled to be held from July 26 to August 8. It was also scheduled to be held first in Russia for the specially abled people, the first Chess Olympiad and the 93rd FIDE Congress event but subsequently withdrawn.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mk Stalin was delighted to receive the news and termed it a moment of pride.
“It is a matter of happiness that Chennai, known as the capital of the country’s chess game, is set to host the 44th World Chess Olympiad. It is a proud moment for Tamil Nadu! Chennai has warmly welcomed all the kings and queens of Chess”, chief minister MK Stalin tweeted.
