Indian Sellers on Amazon, Flipkart Face Antitrust Raids

An antitrust raid has been launched against two prime home sellers of E-commerce company Amazon India and Flipkart, by the Antitrust body Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Thursday. The raid has been conducted following following accusations of competition law violations.

The 2 Amazon sellers that faced the antitrust raids were Cloudtail and Appario. Different sources mentioned some sellers on Walmart’s Flipkart platform had been additionally being raided by officers of the CCI but there were no detail disclosed.

This is a significant development as generally CCI doesn’t do searches in non-cartel cases,” a former official of the competition regulator told Reuters.

The raids, carried out in the capital, New Delhi and the southern tech hub of Bengaluru, related to an investigation the CCI ordered in January 2020.

Amazon has previously said it “does not give preferential treatment to any seller on its marketplace,” and “treats all sellers in a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory manner”.
