International Desk: Tedros Adhanom, the Director-General of World Health Organization on Tuesday stated that Coronavirus pandemic is accelerating rapidly and it has not reached its peak yet.
The WHO chief said that: “While the number of deaths appears to have leveled off globally, in reality, some countries have made significant progress in reducing the number of deaths, while in other countries deaths are still on the rise.”
He also said that global infections are likely to hit 10 Million within a week.
Dr. Michael Ryan, the Executive Director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme confirmed that the virus is continuing to gain pace rapidly. Noting the marked increase in the number of confirmed cases being reported in the past five or six weeks, he warned that a spike in deaths could be soon to follow.
During a press briefing, Dr. Ryan stated that “In April and May, we were dealing with 100,000 cases a day. Today we’re dealing with 200,000 a day.”
Ryan also stated that the number of COVID-19 deaths appeared to be stable for the moment. But he cautioned that there is often a lag time between the increase confirmed cases and the deaths reported, due to the time it takes for the coronavirus to run its course in patients.
