The creator of GIF Steve Wilhite passed away at 74. His Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) helped personalize the web.

Wilhist was an American computer scientist who worked at CompuServe.

The pc scientist’s group at CompuServe developed the GIF in 1987. The new format grew to become a signature function of the early net and later the go-to means for exchanging jokes, memes and reactions on social media.

In 2013 Wilhist was awarded the Webby Lifetime Achievement award.
