The earthquake that struck Indonesia on Monday caused widespread devastation. Here, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 268, with 151 still missing. The earthquake was centred in the Cianjur region of West Java province, with a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey (6.2 mi).
According to the head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency, 268 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the earthquake, while 151 remain missing. According to officials, 22 thousand houses were damaged in the earthquake-affected area. This attack has left over 1,000 people injured.
Siyanjur city was the epicentre of the earthquake
According to US Geological Survey data, the earthquake’s epicentre was in Cianjur, West Java. The epicentre of this 5.6 magnitude earthquake was only 10 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface. The earthquake occurred in a densely populated area. A landslide is always a possibility here. Many buildings have collapsed as a result of the earthquake. The rescue operation to evacuate people from the building debris is still ongoing.
The majority of deaths occurred in hospitals
According to the head of Cianjur’s local administration, the majority of the deaths occurred in a hospital where patients were admitted, and that hospital has been turned into ruins. He told Indonesian media that the city’s Sayang hospital had no power after the earthquake, preventing doctors from treating victims immediately. In which some patients died as a result of a lack of treatment. He stated that there was an urgent need for more health workers due to the large number of patients, but that things are now under control.
Earth shook in Mexico too
On the other hand, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Tuesday. There was chaos as soon as the earthquake struck. People rushed out of their homes and onto the street. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at a depth of 19 km about 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) west-southwest of Las Brisas in Baja California (12 mi). Earthquake tremors were also felt in this area earlier this year, in September.
