Donald Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida was raided by the FBI earlier this month, has now requested a federal court to prevent the agency from studying the evidence it uncovered. According to Reuters, the former US president stated in the court filing: “Politics cannot be allowed to impact the administration of justice. Law enforcement – a shield that protects Americans – cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes,” It goes on to say.
The filing was made at a federal court in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump’s lawyers claimed, “Therefore, we seek judicial assistance in the aftermath of an unprecedented and unnecessary raid.” Eleven sets of sensitive data were confiscated during the raids, according to the US Federal Investigation Agency, amid claims of document mishandling.
Trump has also requested the appointment of a “neutral third-party attorney,” sometimes known as a special master, to determine whether the confiscated data are protected by executive privilege.
Trump is being investigated
During the August 8 search, the New York Times reported that more than 300 classified documents were found from the affluent house. Trump, on the other hand, previously claimed that all records had been declassified without providing any evidence to back up his assertion.
The Mar-a-Lago search warrant was authorised by a federal judge “upon the required finding of probable cause,” Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley previously stated. The FBI searches were alleged to be part of an investigation into whether Trump improperly deleted papers when he left the presidency in January 2021 after losing the election to Joe Biden.
Since his term expired last year, he has been the subject of various inquiries.
