National Desk: India Surpasses UK to become fourth worst-hit country by Coronavirus with a total of 297,535 coronavirus infections. India’s ministry of health and family welfare said that two and a half months of nationwide lockdown imposed in March kept numbers of infections relatively low. But with restrictions easing in recent weeks, cases have shot up, raising questions about whether authorities have done enough to avert the catastrophe.
And the lockdown, eased earlier this month, is now largely being enforced in high-risk areas. Schools, colleges and cinemas, however, remain shuttered nationwide while, spiking caseload came after India allowed the reopening of shops, shopping centres, manufacturing and religious places.
Balram Bhargava the director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research said that, “The lockdown kept transmission low but in a large population of 1.3 billion, people remain susceptible and the campaign against the virus is likely to go on for months.”
Infections in rural areas have surged, however, after migrant workers who left cities and towns after they lost jobs returned to their home towns.
