Indian Delegation consisting of Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane has met Myanmar’s State-counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. They were meeting for talks on taking forward bilateral relations in a wide range of areas.
The Indian Delegation of Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Army Chief Gen. MM Naravane also handed over a consignment of 3000 vials of Remdesivir to Myanmar’s State Counsellor, Suu Kyi. This is a part of India’s efforts to help Myanmar fight COVID-19 pandemic.
The Foreign Secretary and MM Naravane began their two-day visit to Myanmar on October 4. This is the first time an Indian delegation to Myanmar included both the officials. Their meeting is a means to take forward ties in areas ranging from security to connectivity.
Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla and MM Naravane both discussed many important bilateral issues during their meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi. The discussion was at the Foreign Ministry in Naypyidaw.
The operationalization of Myanmar’s Sittwe port is part of the Kaladan Transit Transport Project. It will boost connectivity with the North-Eastern states of India. This will also enhance security cooperation to counter activities of militant groups especially along the borders of Manipur and Nagaland. These borders are among the key issues on the agenda of the Indian delegation.
On August 2020, India provided Myanmar $5 million as an annual contribution under the border area development programme. This development programme was started in 2012. The development was meant to last for 5 years, yet later it was extended till 2022.
This development programme led to the implementation of around 140 projects in Myanmar state and Naga Self-Administered Zone.
