Shehbaz Sharif Touted To Become Next Pakistan PM

Shehbaz Sharif who served as the Chief Minister of Punjab for the longest term is being touted to be the next PM of Pakistan.

The General elections of Pakistan are scheduled to be held in Pakistan less than 60 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly. Earlier it was set to dissolve on 13 August 2023, which means that the election must be held by or before 12 October 2023. However n 3 April 2022, Prime Minister Imran Khan advised President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, calling for elections to be held before July 2022. However, this move is controversial because it came after Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri unilaterally dismissed a motion of no confidence against him on the day it was set to be voted on.

On Thursday, Pakistan Supreme Court cleared the deck by setting aside Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri‘s ruling which rejected the no-confidence motion against the Government led by Imran Khan. It directed to hold the sitting of the National Assembly“not later than 10:30 am on April 9″.

If Imran Khan is removed due to the no-confidence motion, a new leader of the House should be elected in the same session, the apex court said.

“…if the no-confidence motion against the prime minister succeeds, then the Assembly will appoint the new prime minister,” it quoted.

Shebaz Sharif is the brother of Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan who served for 3 non-consecutive terms, a total of 9 years. In 2018 the Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified Nawaz from holding public office and sentenced imprisonment of 10 years. In 2021 Nawaz is in London for medical treatment on expired bail.

Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif who has been a member of National Assembly of Pakistan since August 13th, 2018 is the current Presiden of the Pakistan Muslim League-N.
