Ranil Wickremesinghe who had been serving as the acting President after former President Gotabaya Rajapaksha escaped the country amidst the crisis has been elected as the new President of Sri Lanka.

Ranil Wickremesinghe who served as six time prime minister has won the election that took place amidst huge crisis and protest. The official results were out today on Wednesday which shows Wickremesinghe polled 134 votes. Whereas the opposition leader Dullas Alahapperuma got 82 votes and leftist front’s leader Anura Dissanayake got only three votes.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is 73 years old is detested with the protest that is taking place in the entire country where protesters were seen manhandling government buildings and creating mess. Wickremesinghe has extended a state of emergency in the island nation which gives police and security forces sweeping powers.
