Stop Food Waste Day is an International day, an endeavour to fight against food waste. The day was globally marked on 27th April which was initiated in 2017. Compass Group, the world’s largest food service took the first step to fight against food waste globally and thus the day was marked as Stop Food Waste Day.
Stop Food Waste Day aims to change the statistics of food waste, continuing to decrease it over time. This is as part of its mission to create a positive impact on people, the planet and the food system. They serve 9.8 million meals daily in North America alone. The company also takes its effort how to track reduce waste as much as possible. They also seek to donate 250000 pounds of food each year to the local food banks.
Around the world, more than enough food is produced to feed the global population—but as many as 811 million people still go hungry. In Somalia, 5.6 million people are currently food insecure and 2.8 million people cannot meet their daily food requirements due to the compounding impacts of extended drought, flooding, desert locust infestations, the economic impacts of COVID-19 and conflict.
To celebrate the day people should support and take necessary steps to fight against food waste.
