Guwahati: North Korea on Tuesday blew up a joint liaison office used to foster better ties with its Southern counterpart in its border town as more than a year of diplomatic progress quickly fades away.
This retaliation from North Korea comes after South Korea threatened of take action if North Korean defectors went ahead with a campaign to send propaganda leaflets into the North. The move comes just hours after the North renewed threats of military action at the Korean border.
Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency has reported that the North destroyed the office to correspond with the ‘mindset of the enraged people to surely force human scum and those, who have sheltered the scum, to pay dearly for their crimes,’ apparently referring to North Korean defectors who for years have floated anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.
North Korean state media reported that the four-story building, which is located in the town of Kaesong on the North Korean side of the demilitarized zone that divides the two Koreas, was “completely destroyed by a “terrific explosion” at 2:50 p.m. local time. The destroyed site, which is in the North’s territory, was opened in 2018 to help the two Koreas – technically in a state of war – to communicate.
Operations at the office were suspended in January because of the coronavirus pandemic.
