The announcement comes as Donald Trump tries to secure his position for the second term. He wants to make the impression that he is fulfilling the promises he made four years ago.
According to sources, there are more than 5000 American troops in Iraq now. In July, a top US general for the Middle East made an announcement that the US will keep a smaller but enduring presence in the country.
The commander of US Central Command, Marine General Frank McKenzie believes that the Iraqis welcome the US and coalition troops. The Iraqis want US and Coalition troops in their ongoing fight to keep IS fighters from taking control of the country again.
Two weeks ago Trump made the announcement in front of reporters that they look forward to the day when there will be no US troops in Iraq. The comment came during an Oval Office meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi. However, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo emphasized at the same meeting that full withdrawal is not possible in the near future. The full withdrawal is only possible once the mission is complete.
