News Desk: The UK is considering to mint a coin to commemorate ‘Father of our Nation,’ Mahatma Gandhi. This development comes amid the increasing interest in acknowledging the contributions of people belonging to the Black, Asian and other minority ethnic (BAME) communities.
The Royal Mint Advisory Committee is working to create a coin featuring Mahatma Gandhi.
“We are working with the Chancellor (Rishi Sunak) and the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to develop a proposal. It is too early to reveal further specific details about the coin as we are still in the initial stages of discussions,” a spokesperson for The Royal Mint said.
Rishi Sunak, who is also the finance minister, on August 1, asked the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to pursue recognition of individuals from those communities on the United Kingdom’s (UK) coinage.
“Their contribution should be recognised by Britain,” Mr. Sunak said.
The Indian High Commission in the UK has welcomed the proposal.
“Gandhi has been a symbol of equality and humanity for the whole world. His message of non-violence is more relevant today than ever,” an official said.
The RMAC is an independent committee made up of experts who recommend themes and designs for coins to the Chancellor, in his role as Master of the Mint.
