Guwahati: Transport department on Monday placed Kamrup Metro district transport officer (DTO) Arun Bora and three others under suspension for irregularities in motor vehicle tax. State transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary tendered the suspension order after irregularities regarding the deposition of motor vehicle tax came to the notice of the transport department.
In an inquiry, the suspended officer allowed the tax evasion, wherein a vehicle owner could pay the current year tax by skipping the arrear. The motor vehicle taxation rule mandates the vehicle owner to clear the arrears while paying tax for the current year.
The transport department has directed the commissioner of transport to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. “The department will recover the taxes wherever evaded, as all the data is available in the NIC database,” official statement.
The transport department further directed the National Information Centre (NIC) – as they maintain the Vahan portal to plug technical loopholes and prevent such irregularities in future.
Along with Bora, the three suspended officials are head assistant Simanta Neog, junior assistant Arup Kumar Barman and cashier Sidhheshwar Ranghang– employees of Kamrup Metro district transport office.
