Niti Aayog member Dr. VK Paul on Friday during a press briefing of the Health Ministry stated that there has been no case of the Lambda virus, a variant of Covid 19 in India.
The Niti Aayog member also informed that the Central government is closely monitoring the global landscape of this new variant.
Had it entered India, it would have been detected by INSACOG (The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium of Genomics)
“We should be watchful as the Lambda virus is now spreading across the world. The full potential of the variant is yet to be ascertained globally.
The Lambda virus remains a variant of interest, as classified by the World Health Organization.” Dr. Paul added.
Joint Secretary of Union Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal also informed –
“Lambda is the seventh variant of interest, which was notified by the World Health Organization on June 14. This variant is predominant in Peru and was first reported in Peru. Our INSACOG is now monitoring the situation.”
Origin of Lambda variant –
First found in Peru, the Lambda variant has now spread to around 30 countries in the world, including many European countries.
The virus has also been detected in the United Kingdom.
Reported first in Peru, this variant is now responsible for nearly 82 percent of the Covid 19 cases in Peru.
Lambda variant is now considered deadlier than the Delta variant.
In the latest development, Lambda has been detected in Canada. There have been at least 11 cases of Lambda variant in the country.
