West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she was injured “after being pushed against her car” in Nandigram on Wednesday.

The incident occurred hours after she filed nomination papers to contest the West Bengal election from the East Midnapore constituency.
After filing her papers at Haldia sub-divisional office headquarters, Mamata Banerjee visited seven temples.
The last puja she offered was at Ranichak Giribaz temple in Birulia, after which she walked to her car.
It was then that “a few unknown persons pushed the CM against her car and then slammed the door on her foot.”

“Four-five persons pushed me. The attack was deliberate. My leg has swollen up and I feel feverish and have a headache,” CM Banerjee said as she was lifted into her car. She also complained of “chest pain and breathlessness.”
CM Mamata Banerjee further added, “Neither the local police nor East Midnapore SP P. Prakash was not around when the incident occurred.”
The incident threw Bengal politics into turmoil, with several protests against the “attack” on Banerjee.

However, opposition members charged TMC with “injecting drama into politics” and TMC seniors attacking the opposition for their “lack of sensitivity”.
Moreover, several eyewitnesses denied Banerjee’s claims that she was pushed by a few people.
“I was there, she (CM) was sitting inside her car but the door was open. The door closed after it touched a poster. Nobody pushed or hit…there was no one near the door.” Eyewitness Chitranjan Das who was present at Nandigram’s Birulia stated.

A five-member medical board was formed to supervise her treatment. Doctors said she had complained of pain in her left foot, which was swollen, as well as in her chest, shoulder, and hip.
New Bengal DGP P. Nirajnayan, taking over from Virendra who was removed by the EC in a late evening decision on Tuesday, called district SP Prakash soon after the incident and asked him to submit a report.
